Senator Olympia Snowe’s State Office Representative, Mr. Brian Whitney, Director of Outreach & Economic Development and Maine Department of Economic & Community Development Commissioner, John Richardson, will provide their insight on Maine’s share of the federal stimulus money.  They will speak about the various projects around the state that may benefit from the stimulus, provide thoughts on what may lie ahead in the coming months. and may also speak about possible grants and loans that may be available to small business, alternative energy projects, etc. 

We encourage you to come prepared with questions for Director Whitney and Commissioner Richardson for the Q & A session immediately following the presentation.

About our Presenters:

In 2005, Brian Whitney joined the staff of Maine’s senior U.S. Senator, the Honorable Olympia J. Snowe, and serves as her Director of Outreach and Economic Development.  In this position, he serves as a senior level staffer responsible for representing the Senator and serving as a liaison with officials from federal, state, county and municipal government, private and public economic development entities, and top management of corporations, for the purpose of assisting constituents and businesses and helping to foster economic development activities in Maine.  

Mr. Whitney has extensive experience in legislative matters at both the state and federal level, as well as experience in the private sector managing a business. 

John Richardson is Commissioner of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD).  As Commissioner, he is responsible for coordinating and directing the state’s economic development offices, which include the Office of Business Development, the Office of Small Business, the Office of Community Development, the Office of Innovation, and the Maine Office of Tourism. 

Richardson served four consecutive terms in the Maine House from 1998-2006 as the State Representative from District 63, representing part of Brunswick.  During that time he rose in the ranks to House Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Business and Economic Development in the 120th Legislature; to House Majority Leader in the 121st Legislature; and to Speaker of the House in the 122nd Legislature.  In December 2004, John Richardson was sworn in as the 97th Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.
