Maine’s Real Estate Community Remembers Founding Member and Past Board Member Alan M. Fishman

KENNEBUNK — Alan Mark Fishman, 69, of Kennebunk, died peacefully on Aug. 30, 2011, with his family by his side.
He was born in Boston, Mass., on June 17, 1942, the son of the late Louis I. Fishman and Marion Copellman.
He was educated in the Brookline schools and graduated from Lawrence Academy. He attended Babson College, and graduated from Boston University, with a B.S. in Business. While in Massachusetts, Alan served in the Air National Guard and began his career, representing Stop N’Shop’s real estate division. Shortly thereafter, Alan and his growing family moved to Maine to join the family business, Eastland Shoe.
A few years later, Alan returned to real estate, and joined J.B. Brown & Sons, southern Maine’s premier commercial development company. Alan developed, leased and managed hundreds of properties throughout southern Maine. Following his entrepreneurial spirit in the early 80s, Alan started his own development company, Atbro Corporation, and was involved in the development of what is now known as 1 and 2 Portland Square in downtown Portland. Expanding on development, he purchased Property Management Services, a full service property management, leasing and maintenance company. At the urging of his colleagues, Alan founded Fishman Realty Group, which has been in existence for more than 30 years and is currently located on Forest Avenue in Portland.
Alan’s passion for over 40 years has been real estate and property management – most importantly, the clients, customers and friends he has made in the business and the strong relationships he has built with them throughout the years. He was a founding member of the Maine Commercial Association of Realtors and a Board Member of the Maine Real Estate Development Association.
Alan also applied his love of real estate and development in his volunteer work.
Alan was on the Board of Directors for the Building Committee of the new Portland Museum of Art, Cedars Nursing Care Center, Temple Beth El and was an active participant in the restoration of Etz Chaim Synagogue in Portland. He was involved in the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and Business Network International.
Alan was a dedicated father and family man, who never missed his children’s activities. He cherished his role as doting father, grampa and dog lover. He loved music, including his singing group !Zing. People surrounded Alan because of his kind nature and wonderful sense of humor.
Alan, aka ‘Fish’ leaves behind his beloved wife, Joanne Wheeler Fishman of Kennebunk; four children, Caren Fishman and husband Joel Friedman of Andover, Mass., Marc Fishman and his wife Kate of Falmouth, Louis Fishman and his wife Julie of Breckenridge, Colo., and Jon Fishman and his wife Michelle of Clinton, Conn.; eight grandchildren, Daniela, Leo, Hannah, Avi, Maia, Ella, Anabella and Nina; and dog, Ali. He also leaves behind his mother, Marion Copellman of Needham, Mass.; and his sisters, Carol Shander of Ashland, Mass., and Jane Gilbert and companion Sam Williams, of Orland. Alan’s extended family includes mother-in-law, Janet Gilblair; sister and brother- in-law, Carol and Norman Roy; former wife, Roberta Fishman; and many nieces, nephews; cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m., at Etz Chaim. Interment to follow at Hope Cemetery, 2 Benard Lane, Kennebunk. Shiva services to be held at the home of Marc and Kate Fishman, 156 Brook Rd., Falmouth, on Thursday from 6:30-9 p.m. and on Friday from 2-5 p.m.
