The Maine DEP has designated nearly three dozen waterways in Maine’s largest urban areas as “urban impaired streams” due to their failure to meet water quality standards because of effects of stormwater runoff from nearby developed land. As a result, commercial landowners throughout Maine have now become subject to stringent environmental permit requirements for additional stormwater treatment controls.
